Formative Development of a Web-based Diabetes Medication Adherence Dashboard Authors: Richard Goldsworthy, MSEd, PhD, Academic Edge, Inc., Bloomington, IN et al Summary: Diabetes affects over 24 million individuals in the U.S. Understanding of ideal patient and provider diabetes management practices has significantly improved; however, optimal diabetes care behaviors are often not achieved in real-world clinical experiences as a result of personal, environmental, and sociotechnical barriers. Two such barriers to patient self-management and regimen adherence are inefficient communication and lack of clinical “facetime.” Web-based patient dashboards, with management, information, and education resources may help, yet for diabetes care generally, and medication adherence specifically, these tools have remained unexplored. Reducing Alcohol & Substance Misuse: SBIRT in Action with Patients and Practices Author: Richard Goldsworthy, MSEd, PhD, Academic Edge, Inc., Bloomington, IN Summary: Alcohol and substance misuse represent a significant public health problem in the U.S. Substance use disorders affect an estimated 25% of primary care patients and many more are affected by at-risk use. Public health clinic/primary care clinic providers are uniquely positioned to address patients' risky use behaviors through Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment. SBIRT is endorsed by numerous organizations and agencies, including SAMSHA, and adoption is gaining momentum. Despite this opportunity, there are few cases illustrating SBIRT patient-provider interactions (PPIs) and none that address organization-wide implementation issues. More... |

Faith Leaders' Perceptions of their Role in Substance Misuse Prevention and Counseling Author: Richard Goldsworthy, MSEd, PhD, Academic Edge, Inc., Bloomington, IN Summary: The U.S. consumes two-thirds of the world's illicit drugs, almost ¼ of U.S college students meet clinical criteria for substance abuse and addiction, and every American child will be offered illegal drugs at least once before graduating from high school. Faith leaders are well-situated to identify and engage individuals with risky substance use behaviors; however, little is known about faith leaders' experience with and perceptions regarding addressing substance use issues within their faith organizations. Faith & Suicide: Development of Video Cases for Faith Leaders Authors: Richard Goldsworthy, MSEd, PhD, Academic Edge, Inc., Bloomington, IN et al Summary: 34,000 die by suicide every year in the U.S.-one person every 15 minutes-and 1.1 million additional adults may attempt suicide. Faith leaders are well-positioned to help those in distress and at-risk, yet there are no cases faith leaders can look to as models of reasonable suicide-related risk-reduction practices. This project sought to create video-based cases of faith leaders counseling congregants at increased suicide risk. More... |

Expedited Partner Treatment: Implementation Resources, Research, and Some Just-In-Time Assistance Authors: Richard Goldsworthy, MSEd, PhD, Academic Edge, Inc., Bloomington, IN et al Summary: In expedited partner treatment (EPT), patients testing positive for bacteriological STD deliver prescription medication or a prescription to sexual partners. EPT is permissible in an increasing number of states; however, implementation lags significantly behind permissibility and is often inconsistent within and across jurisdictions. With no mandated implementation across the U.S., treatable infections, treatment, messaging, and targeted populations vary from state-to-state. More... |
